Carlos David Dias Correia Lopes

Praia, Santiago, 1964

Instrumentalist (keyboards), composer

Calú d’Arquiteto was a member of Abel Djassi and the Zeca Santos group in the 1980s and, from 1990 onward, of Bulimundo. He participated in the recording of the albums Na Kal Ki Bu ta Linha and Ta Nderia Ka Ta Kai.

He found his musical influences at home, through his parents: his father played violin and mandolin, while his mother sang and played the pian. In addition to the string instruments he had access to at home, he devoted himself to the keyboards, and recalls that one of his mentors was Zeca Couto, who was responsible for helping him enter the music scene. In Praia, before leaving Cabo Verde, he played with Lulan at live music venues.

In 2009, he emigrated to the United States, where he recorded a solo instrumental keyboard album, Alma e Vibrações, featuring several classics of Cabo Verdean music.  The album includes Zé Galvão on vocals on one of the tracks. Calú regularly performs at live music venues serving the Cabo Verdean community in the New England region.
