Gau Salgado, who has lived in the United States since the 1980s, was a member of several groups with other Cabo Verdean musicians, including Arpa Sound and Os Pecos Band. Before emigrating, while still in Assomada, he had participated in Gama 80.

Over the years, several solo albums were released.

Funadeca, a 2009 single, reveals the artist’s embrace of a style combining funaná with deca. This marked a change in funaná, with the tempo becoming considerably faster than it had been until then. Within a few years, this development led to kutxi po. In general, different rhythms appear throughout Gau Salgado’s discography, but  funaná is consistently predominant.
