George Azevedo began his career in the 1940s playing in jazz and blues bands in the region of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He was part of many groups including Duke Oliver, Phill Edmond and Joe Livramento, as well as Skyliners Big Band. He also worked as a studio musician.  

In external contexts to the Cape Verdean community, he played with big names of the jazz such as Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Count Basie and the singers Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaugh and Carmen Mac Rae, according to A Semana Online, on the news of the donation of his saxophone and other objects from his estate to the Cape Verde Museum in East Providence, in 2009.
